The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of each of the participating centers, and all participants provided written informed consent. The study was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. All participants were included in the study.

A total of 40 patients were recruited from the outpatient clinics of the Department of Dermatology and Medical Imaging, University of Montreal, located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 years of age). In all subjects, the clinical diagnosis and treatment were based on the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. The participants were divided into two groups: group A received topical finasteride (5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg) in 1 mg, 2 mg or 5 mg oral dose, respectively, for a total of 40 subjects (40 for the 1mg, 2 mg and 5 mg groups). Group B received topical finasteride (15 mg or 30 mg) in 1 mg, 2 mg or 5 mg oral dose, respectively, for a total of 45 subjects (45 for the 1mg, 2 mg and 5 mg groups). The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of each of the participating centers. All subjects were included in the study. The patients were informed about the study and signed an informed consent form.

The patients were required to have a minimum of 6 months of treatment and at least 3 months of follow-up of the treatment. In this study, the patients received the treatment in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. In order to minimize the effect of finasteride (5, 10, 15 or 30 mg), the daily dose of 5, 10, 15 or 30 mg was changed according to the number of subjects who had a response. We chose the daily dose of 5 mg to decrease the effect of the treatment in the following way: 1 mg and 2 mg or 5 mg and 30 mg.
